Workshop - Reportage: " 'Gusingo' - Say what you see."
Anja Niedringhaus, Associated Press (AP) photographer and Pulitzer Prize winner.
A photo should be more than a one-dimensional depiction of reality, it should express a meaning in the composition that is determined by the point in time, the subject, the perspective and the cropping. The image should have a critical stance, otherwise it becomes arbitrarily lost in the moment. People provide countless scenes that tell stories - it is just a matter of seeing them. From a certain perspective these images become reportage. The workshop is meant to offer an introduction to the basic tenets of classical photojournalism.
The workshop will be held in German.

Lecture: "Conspirative Photography"
Joan Fontcuberta, artist
Joan Fontcuberta's work explores the conditions of truth in visual information. His projects subvert the canonic function of photographs as documents in history, science and mass communication. Sophisticated narrative constructions provide the pretext to debate issues such as credibility, veracity or authenticity from epistemological and political perspectives. A special focus is done on "mockumentary" as criticism, parody and deconstruction of traditional documentary in both film and still photography. As a common strategy images deal with irony and humour and are pushed to conspire to fill the no man's land between reality and falsehood.

Rui Prata, Artistic Director, Encontros da Imagem and Director of the Museu da Imagem in Braga, Portugal
The figure of the exhibition curator is something recent in the art world. Its role has been building progressively from the exhibition "When Attitudes Become Form"; by Harald Szeemann in 1969. Since then, the work of curating exhibitions has evolved into an exercise of imagination, creativity and effectiveness, but consequently has no precise rules. Currently exhibitions, one-person or collective ones, tend mostly to be thematic. The curator sets a theme, a question, a reflection and simultaneously seeks to combine it with the work of artists building a narrative. Rui Prata will reflect on the role of the curator through his past and future projects in Encontros da Imagem.

Workshop - Experimental photography: "No-budget staged photography“
Boris Eldagsen ,photo media artist
What does an artist need to stage a strong image?
Expensive equipment? Good studio lighting? Assistants? Models? Set designers? Make-up pros? None of them.
All you need is a good eye, intuition and an understanding of the theme in question. This is a workshop about content. And to depict this all you need is a camera.
What Boris Eldagsen has developed in the course of a 20-year career is something he himself calls ¥no-budget staged photography'. He offers insight into how he works, using basics that are available to create a success. In the course of the workshop the participants will learn to break the conventional rules, forget the compulsions of technology and produce images that they perhaps never thought were possible. Goodbye Studio! Farewell Photoshop!

Ralph Larmann will explain his approach of classical photography and 3608 panorama photographs that he took for the 3608 tour by the Irish band U2 and of the NOBEL PRIZE Banquet in 2009 in Stockholm. To achieve good concert and event photos you not only need the right equipment, but must have ideas, be creative in how you work with the artists and those involved in a production, learn to anticipate situations in advance, find the right angle, understand the business and have a good feel for the people. The photos must capture the mood for the viewer, recreating the experience for him.

Never manipulated, the photographs reveal both the surreal as well as the whimsical nature of human experience.

Workshop – Body and Nature: "Art is risk made visible“
Arno Rafael Minkkinen, photographer and professor
The Finnish-American photographer Arno Minkkinen primarily uses his body in combination with the photographic medium to express surrealistic visions of man and nature.
Establishing a direction in contemporary photography means more than having a good eye for the medium. It means selecting from hundreds of images those that best express your intentions as you build a body of work that not only enlightens others but also brings enlightenment and inspiration to you. In this workshop, we will seek to grow and expand your photographic talents not only as an imagemaker but also as an artist with a contemporary vision of the world.

Lecture:
"The amorous adventures of Mr. Cheese" - fashion and staged photography
Monica Menez, photographer
"No repetition." .Monica Menez's work leaves no place for the illness called repetition. It is hard to classify her staged shots. The focus is not just on fashion, and her portraits are not just about faces, and the models are not simply beautiful. With her photographs, Monica Menez creates artistic havens in the midst of reality. Often she plays with optical illusion or reflection in a finely ironic manner. Her style always includes a special element of surprise. She stages precise shots, following the unwritten rules of spontaneity. Her work for young fashion labels such as Blutsgeschwister offers her the artistic scope she seeks. And Monica Menez needs it, as she is constantly re-inventing herself.

The lecture will be held in German.
Saturday and Sunday, August 21st and 22nd, 10a.m.-6p.m.
at the FFF office, Weißfrauenstrasse 1, 60311 Frankfurt
Workshop: "Fashion photography and staged shots"
Monica Menez, photographer
Fashion photography does not just require technical precision in the lighting and camera work. Menez compares preparing a fashion shoot to making a great cake: the recipe forms the basis and all the ingredients have to be carefully measured. It's the same with fashion. Only the perfect interaction of model, styling, make-up, lighting and above all a well-thought-out concept culminate in a successful production. This workshop is intended to offer participants insight into the planning of a fashion spread and putting this into practice.

Workshop - Documentary / experimental photography:
"Choreography of the Urban"
Wolfgang Zurborn, Photographer
Never before was the human body more strongly in the focus of interest than in the modern media. In the sea of images, in a world full of simulation, the feeling for one's own body, for individual experience can swiftly get lost.
In this workshop we shall use photographic means to create vibrant testimony to urban life that consciously includes the body in the picture concept. The city is no empty stage with no actors, but a highly complex place where different architectural givens and social occasions interact. It affords people a forum to consciously or unintentionally stage themselves.
The choreography of bodies on the street, of movements, gestures, mimicry, detached from all functionality, creates a theatre of real life. Photographers who develop a sensitive eye for these "stagings" of everyday life can exploit the tension between body and space to emphasize our subjective experience of our surroundings.

Lecture: "From Dada to Surrealism: Photography's Primary Role in Modern Art"
Steve Yates, art historian and curator
Modern photography is a universal language that emerged beyond cultures at the beginning of the 20th century. It advanced as a major art form, unlimited by the syntax of spoken language or traditional art mediums. The first generation of modernists and avant-garde invented unparalleled forms of photographic expression.
The pioneers of early modern photography developed a wide variety of styles from the mainstream of modern art. Photographs were charged with new meaning and content. The Dadaists and Surrealists expanded content from non-art subjects and dreams. The Dadaists invented photomontage and phonetic forms of sound poetry. The Surrealists advanced these lessons by incorporating the subconscious.
Personal vision added more dimensions than what was seen or experienced by the camera. Modernists constructed an expanding visual vocabulary of symbols with the photographic process and related technologies. Modern photography was filled with personal vision, unconscious desires and fleeting impressions. Dadaists and Surrealists evoked ideas and emotions that were influenced by the profound world of shifting realities after World War I.
