Lecture:
"Georgian Spring: art project or propaganda?"
in cooperation with the Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie
Saturday, April 24th (for time see local press) at the UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES, Design Department, Olbrichweg 10, 64287 Darmstadt
Georgian Spring: A Magnum Journal is the title of a new book published by Chris Boot, and a major exhibition shown in Berlin and Madrid, featuring the work of 10 commissioned Magnum photographers, including Thomas Dworzak, Martin Parr, Antoine D'Agata, and produced for the Ministry of Culture of Georgia (formerly part of the Soviet Union, until 1991). Conceived, photographed and published in under 6 months, with enormous freedom allowed the photographers, Chris will tell the story of its production and discuss the questions it raises about the role of photography produced for national interests.
Chris Boot began working in photography in 1984 with the London community photography workshop the Photo Co-op (now Photofusion). He subsequently worked for Magnum Photos from 1990-98 (including as Director of Magnum London and, later, New York) and at Phaidon Press, as Editorial Director, Photography, from 1998-2000. He has produced exhibitions and books independently since then, publishing his own list of books since 2002, including History by Luc Delahaye, The British Landscape by John Davies, Lodz Ghetto Album (winner of the ICP Infinity Award for Best Book of 2004) and Things As They Are (with World Press Photo, winner of the ICP Infinity Award for best book of 2005). His latest books are Luxury by Martin Parr, We English by Simon Roberts and Georgian Spring by Magnum Photos.
The lecture will be held in English.
