r.prata Rui Prata,
Artistic Director, Encontros da Imagem and Director of the Museu da Imagem in Braga, Portugal

Lecture: "Encontros da Imagem"
Tuesday, May 11th, 7 p.m. at the INSTITUTO CERVANTES FRANKFURT, Staufenstraße 1, 60323 Frankfurt

The figure of the exhibition curator is something recent in the art world. Its role has been building progressively from the exhibition "When Attitudes Become Form"; by Harald Szeemann in 1969. Since then, the work of curating exhibitions has evaluated into an exercise of imagination, creativity and effectiveness, but consequently has no precise rules. Currently exhibitions, one-person or collective ones, tend mostly to be thematic. The curator sets a theme, a question, a reßection and simultaneously seeks to combine it with the work of artists building a narrative. Rui Prata will reßect on the role of the curator through his past and future projects in Encontros da Imagem.

Rui Prata (*1955) received a Masters in History from the University of Porto in 1979. In 2002-3, he did post-grad work as a Fine Arts Director at the ESAP Escola Superior Artistica do Porto and gained a doctorate in 2008 in Curatorship and Contemporary Museology from the University of Visual Arts in Porto. Rui Prata started his professional career as a Professor of History and is currently Artistic Director of Encontros da Imagem (Image Meetings), in which he has taken part since its first realization in 1987.
During his teaching career he has been involved in numerous projects and seminars. Since its opening in 1999 he has been Director of the Braga Museum Image.
He has curated several international exhibitions and is a member of countless juries and curatorial committees. He is Portfolio Review critic at numerous international festivals such as Mois de la Photo de Paris et Montreal, PhotoEspaÒa (PHE), Primavera photographerica, Fotobienal de Bienne, Curitiba's Festival, Fotonoviembre de Tenerife, and Recontres d'Arles.

The lecture will be held in Spanish with simultaneous translation in German.
