Workshop: "Choreography of the Urban"
Documentary / experimental photography
Saturday and Sunday, September 18th and 19th, 10 a.m. & 6 p.m.,
at the FFF Office, Weißfrauenstrasse 1, 60311 Frankfurt

At no time was the human body more strongly in the focus of interest than in the modern media society. In the sea of images, in a world full of simulation, the feeling for one's own body, for individual experience can swiftly get lost.
In this workshop we shall use photographic means to create vibrant testimony to urban life that consciously includes the body in the picture concept. The city is no empty stage with no actors, but a highly complex place where different architectural givens and social occasions interact. It affords people a forum to consciously or unintendedly stage themselves.
The choreography of bodies on the street, of movements, gestures, mimicry, detached from all functionality, creates a theater of real life. Photographers who develop a sensitive eye for these "stagings" of everyday life can exploit the tension between body and space to emphasize our subjective experience of our surroundings.

Wolfgang Zurborn (*1956) is a freelance photographer, who teaches photography at colleges and photo schools in Berlin, Braunschweig, ßorence and Slovakia; together with Tina Schelhorn he has for more than 20 years managed the Lichtblick photo gallery in Cologne and since 1998 has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the German Academy of Photographry where he champions the promotion of art photography.
Zurborn won the German Society for Photography (DGPh) Otto Steinert Prize in 1985 for his project Menschenbilder & Bildermenschen, which he presented in 1987 at Folkwang Museum in Essen. In 2009, Haus der Fotografie, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, held a show on his work since 1980 with the focus on his last two book projects, China! Which China? and Drift (German Photo Book Prize 2008). Exhibitions all over the world have made his photography known internationally. For example, he participated in the show Klaus Honnef curated of German 20th century photography, which ran under the heading of Von Kˆrpern und anderen Dingen (2003-4 in Prague, Moscow, Berlin and Bochum). Wolfgang Zurborn lives and works in Frankfurt/Main.

The workshop will be held in German.
